Freeze vs Float: the big NEET UG counselling change for 2026

This is the single biggest change in the 2026 counselling scheme, and it removes the most wasteful part of the old process.

Under the scheme followed until 2025, every candidate had to physically report at the allotted institute to complete reporting, upgradation or resignation formalities - even a candidate who had no intention of staying and was only there to keep an upgrade alive. Students crossed the country to sign paperwork at a college they were about to leave, and the institute submitted their upgradation willingness on their behalf.

For 2026, MCC has divided allotted candidates into two categories based on whether they want to upgrade.

The two options

How online verification works for Float candidates

1. 1The allotted institute's nodal officer opens your uploaded documents and verifies them online.
2. 2If something is wrong - blurred scans, an incorrect certificate, a mismatch between your claimed category and your certificate, or a missing document - the institute's Document Verification Committee raises a query to you.
3. 3You re-upload corrected documents. Do this as fast as you can: the reporting window is fixed, and running out of time means the seat is cancelled.
4. 4The nodal officer or DVC re-verifies the corrected upload.
5. 5If everything is in order, your seat is provisionally confirmed and you become eligible for the next round. If a discrepancy remains between your claims and your documents, the seat is cancelled.
6. 6You then exercise fresh choices for the next round.

Everyone reports after Round 3

Float is a way to stay in the running, not a way to skip reporting altogether. Once the Round 3 provisional allotment result is declared, physical reporting becomes mandatory for all Round 3 allotted candidates, and for Float candidates from Rounds 1 and 2 who did not end up being upgraded. Everyone eventually shows up in person with originals.

Resigning a seat under each option

The Freeze/Float split also changes how you surrender a seat, which matters if you are holding an all-India seat and then get a state seat you prefer.

Freeze candidates

• You must physically visit the allotted institute and submit your resignation within the window MCC prescribes.
• Resigning under the Round 1 and Round 2 rules makes you eligible for the next round.
• Round 3 seats cannot be resigned or exited.
• Once surrendered, you have no claim on that seat.

Float candidates

• Log in at Candidate Login on the MCC portal, choose Withdrawal (Resignation), and submit online.
• The resignation is recorded on the portal automatically once you submit it.
• The same round rules apply: Round 1 free exit, Round 2 with forfeiture, no exit from Round 3.

So which should you pick?

It is a straight question about your list, not about the mechanics. Choose Freeze if the seat you have is one you would be happy to spend the next five and a half years in - the certainty is worth more than a small chance of a marginal upgrade. Choose Float if there are colleges above your current one that you would genuinely move for, and your rank plausibly reaches them at last year's closing ranks.

The risk in Float is not the paperwork - it is that upgradation cancels your existing seat the moment it happens, permanently. That is why the choice list you file for the next round should contain only colleges you prefer over the one you are already holding.
